The Little Match Girl
by : Hans Christian Andersen
“The Little Match
Girl” is a sad story about a miserable young girl that touched the heart of
many readers. The story begins on a cold winter night in which the snow never
stopped. It was a real, rough and cold dinner. It wasn’t just any kind of
day, it was the last day before New Year. Even thought that day was well known
for making parties and having fun the atmosphere was sad. The reader is
introduced to a frozen little girl, which even though was dressed felt
completely naked on that cold winter air.
The
poor girl lost her only warmth and she just went one barefoot. Her feet were
red and frozen because the temperature was very low. She had an old apron and
matches that she wanted to sell. She didn’t manage to sell any and the hunger
and coldness increased by the minute and those unpleasant feeling were
impossible to ignore.
The coldness growing was stronger and she couldn’t go home since she
didn’t sell any matches. To be honest she didn’t have any desire to go home
since it was a cold attic where her violent father would hit her often. The
wind that was blowing from all sides of that attic didn’t leave any room for a
happy family. She thought how to get warm so she decided to light up one match.
After she did it the light reminded her of a fireplace. After the match burned
out the cold came back, she repeated it all night long until she saw the
brightness light ever.
The next morning she was found frozen with a smile on
her face. Everybody commented on her attempts to keep herself warm with her
matches who left in her small hands but nobody knew that she waited for New
Year with the prettiest pictures in her mind.
This is probably one of the saddest Andersen’s fairy tales set in the 19th century describing the unfortunate fate of a young child who is going through difficult times and dying of cold and hunger. Little match girl gives us the moral that we should always try to survive in whatever conditions we face, we should never move back in life instead of moving ahead we should never lose our self respect and confidence.
