   Language Features in The Short Story

      The story of B 24 obviously is a kind of narrative text. As a narrative, this text mostly used to use past tense which included many of its derivatives, such as past perfect, past future, etc.  Overall, the story uniquely has difference from other narrative texts. In the beginning, the writer brought up the main character as a story teller -he told his experience to the judge- by using simple present tense. the explanation is down below.

1. Simple present tense
    a. Now, Sir, you are there to receive the petitions of prisoner.
        are   : function verb or 'to be' for subject 'you'
        now : adverb of time of simple present tense.
    b. But if you don't do it
        don't : negative form for verb 'do'

2. Simple future tense
    a. And you will soon find which way the wind blows
        will  : auxiliary verb or modal
        give  : verb 1
    b. I'll give you just exactly what occured
        will : auxiliary verb or modal
        give : verb 1

3. Present perfect tense
    a. I've hated some folk in my time
        have  : auxiliary verb for present perfect tense
        hated : verb 3
    b. What I have deserved
        have        : auxiliary verb
        deserved : verb 3

4. Simple past tense
    a. I found my self near Salisbury
        found : verb 2 for subject 'I'
    b. He was a man that liked to talk
        was  : function verb or 'to be' for subject 'he'
        liked : verb 2

5. Past perfect tense
    a. For I had done a year in Exeter Gaol
        had   : auxiliary verb for past perfect tense
        done : verb 3
    b. Which she had pointed out
        had       : auxiliary verb for past perfect tense
        pointed : verb 3

6. Past continues tense
    a. I was trying all I know to keep all of the cross
        was     : function verb or 'to be' for subject 'I'
        trying : verb. ing, comes after function verb
    b. I was sitting alone in the taproom
        was     : function verb
        sitting : verb. ing

7. Past future tense
    a. He would always  come back to this one subject
        would : auxiliary verb or modal for past future tense
        come  : verb 1
    b. You would soon learn enough to show you
         would : auxiliary verb for past future tense
         learn   : verb 1
