There
they meet the shop keeper. The shop keeper, with one ear larger than the other,
entertains the boy and the father with magic tricks, pulling baubles out of
thin air. The shop keeper reminds the father, repeatedly, that this is not just
any magic shop, this is "The Genuine Magic Shop", making sure to
emphasize the "Genuine" in the title. The shop keeper shows them a
raft of magic tricks, though he assures them that the are not tricks, but
really magic. The young boy is entranced, and ultimately picks out several of
the items for his father to get for him. The whole procedure is infused with a
sense of unreality for the father, and he begins to get very nervous, especially
when the shop keeper places his son under a large drum and “disappears” him. The
magic tricks and illusions increase in complexity until the father is no longer
comfortable with what he's seeing, given the shopkeeper's frequent reminders,
but the boy is rapt with excitement.
The
story has an unusual turn, but all is well. The illustrations are what will
stick with you. A very wonderful story about a very
magical shop by one of the master story tellers of all time. Highly
recommended.
