Moral Value of The Story
The moral of "Rip Van Winkle" is
that life passes by with or without a person and that change is inevitable. The story also shows
that a person will pay dearly when they try to avoid change; in many ways,
Irving is asking his readers to be active participants in their own lives and
enjoy each moment. This short story could mean many things to different people. One person
might read it and think about a certain lesson, while another person reads it
and comes up with a totally different meaning and lesson. But one moral most
readers find in 'Rip Van Winkle' is that the time does not wait the
world will keep moving forward and changing. These things will happen even if
someone is not ready for them!
